Frequently asked questions
What is an IP address?
Every device on the internet has an IP address, a number that identifies it so data can find its way back. IPv4 looks like 192.0.2.1. The newer IPv6 looks like 2001:db8::1.
How accurate is the location?
City-level geolocation is an estimate, not a GPS fix. The country is usually right and the city often is, but it can be wrong, especially for mobile networks, VPNs and business connections. The location data comes from MaxMind, so if something looks wrong, the best place to send a correction is MaxMind directly.
What is an ASN?
An Autonomous System Number identifies the network that runs a block of IP addresses, usually an ISP, a hosting company or a large organization. AS8888 is one example. Networks use it to identify each other when they exchange traffic.
What do the ISP and organization mean?
The ISP is the company providing the internet connection. The organization is who the address block is registered to. They are often the same, but for a rented server it can be the hosting provider or their customer.
What is a hostname (reverse DNS / PTR)?
A hostname is the name an IP address points back to, such as one.one.one.one. The network operator sets it with a PTR record. It is optional, so many addresses have none, and the operator chooses the text freely. Treat it as a hint, not proof.
What is the network / CIDR?
Addresses are handed out in blocks. CIDR notation such as 192.0.2.0/24 describes one block, here 256 addresses that share the same first three numbers. It shows the range this address belongs to.
